This unit will explore ecosystems – communities of organisms interacting with their environments. We will learn about the different groups of living organisms that inhabit different types of ecosystems and characteristics that allow them to compete for resources in their environments.
Ecosystems are made up of living organisms interacting with their environment. All ecosystems contain biotic factors, or living things, and abiotic factors, or nonliving things. We will see how these factors work together to maintain balance in an ecosystem.
Changes to the environment can occur in any ecosystem and can have short-term and long-lasting effects. Sometimes these changes can occur quickly such as in the case of natural disasters. Other changes may happen over a period of many years. We will explore different changes that can occur in ecosystems and the effects that they can have on habitats and populations.
In order for organisms to survive in an ecosystem, they must be adapted to their environment. These adaptations are characteristics that help an organism find food and meet its other needs for its survival. We will see examples of different organisms and the adaptations that they have.
